Ugliness and Female Bodies - The Bookless Bookclub
The Bookless Bookclub is back to Bodies, run by Kate!
For this week's session, we'll focus on Ugliness and Female Bodies with texts that centre a female body, and insist upon its importance in literary culture. Moving between feminist theory, fiction and literary memoir, we will think about questions of ugliness in relation to female bodies - what or who is considered to be ugly? what makes a person describe themselves as ugly? is ugliness negative? what are the connections between ugliness and shame?
As ever, there’s no reading to do in advance, nothing to pay, and no need to book. Just turn up, read with us, and join in the chats.

Here Be Icebergs. An evening with Katya Adaui
We are so happy to welcome Peruvian author Katya Adaui to the bookshop, for a unique event celebrating her book "Here Be Icebergs", translated by Rosalind Harvey and published by Edinburgh's own Charco Press. This is Adaui's first event in Scotland, and we are so excited to collaborate with Charco Press for such a special event.
About the book: the mysteries of kinship (families born into and families made) take disconcerting and familiar shapes in these refreshingly frank short stories. A family is haunted by a beast that splatters fruit against its walls every night, another undergoes a near-collision with a bus on the way home from the beach. Mothers are cold, fathers are absent—we know these moments in the abstract, but Adaui makes each as uncanny as our own lives: close but not yet understood.
Join us for a discussion on Adaui’s uncanny stories, kinship, complicated families, literary influences, the experience of being translated, and Latin American literature.
Tickets are redeemable against a copy of the book on the night of the event. No proof is required for concession tickets.

Something You'll Hate Me For. An evening with Erica Mou and her translator Clarissa Botsford
We are so excited to welcome writer and musician Erica Mou to the bookshop, together with her translator Clarissa Botsford for the launch of "Something You'll Hate Me For", published by Héloïse Press.
"Something You'll Hate Me For" is a lyrical and intimate account of a mother's last journey, an uncompromising exploration of a mother-daughter relationship and of the choices we make when life brings us to the edge.
Join us for an evening celebrating the second book by Italian songwriter and author Erica Mou, following her novel "Thirsty Sea", both translated by Clarissa Botsford.
We will discuss mother-daughter relationships, grief, motherhood, and translating a musician’s prose.
